Lord Bhairav, who is also popularly known as Kaal Bhairav, is one of the most fierce incarnations of Lord Shiva. The Baal Roop (child incarnation) of Kaal Bhairav is worshipped as Batuk Bhairav, which is worshipped by Taantriks while performing Taantrik Vidyas. As per ancient beliefs, there are eight embodiments of Kaal Bhairav which namely are – Bheeshan Bhairav, Sanhara Bhairav, Kapaal Bhairav, Krodh Bhairav, Ruru Bhairav, Chand Bhairav, Unmatth Bhairav, and Asithaang Bhairav. The Vaahana (vehicle) of Kaal Bhairav is a Dog. Hence, devotees who take care of or feed dogs are considered rewarded the most by the deity as such a humble gesture pleases him. Kaal Bhairav is also popularly known as a Kotwal or Kshetrapalak and is known to guard and protect the 52 Shakti Pithas of Maa Parvati (consort of Lord Shiva).

According to Hindu mythological tales, it is believed that Lord Brahma had five heads, but to punish Him for arrogance, Kaal Bhairav chopped off one of Brahma's heads, and since then, Lord Brahma has only four heads. Often in Lord Bhairava's portraits, He is seen carrying Lord Brahma's fifth head. Kaal Bhairav is worshipped for wish fulfillment, protection against negative energies, black magic, and to attain a good fortune. He is also worshipped before beginning with a new journey or traveling. His portrait can be identified wherein the deity carries the severed fifth head of Lord Brahma, a Drum, and a Trident.
